The current principle that I am applying in my days is the principle of de-cluttering- be it from the material things that I have, sense of style, relationships and even my mental and emotional baggage that I’ve been carrying for years.

The easiest way to gain that inner locus of control is by managing the measurable things such as your work or personal space, diet, calories burned, what you spend your time on etc. I learned the hard way that in order to improve our emotional and mental state which are abstract concepts, we must learn how to control the concrete ones. So for this post, I am going to run through with you how I came to detach with the things that I’ve acquired over the years.

The main premise that you need to learn is that you only need a few things in order to survive. The latest trends and ‘ins’ changes from one generation to another but the necessities will still remain the same. Again, you will only need a few things that works well for you and the rest becomes insubstantial. This applies to all the things that you have- clothes, shoes, mementos, papers, documents, and whatever it is you’re hoarding. This can also apply to the applications that you have in your phone. The more things that you have, the messier and more complicated life can be. So we are trying to limit our resources to a manageable one.

God made life simple, it’s us who made it complicated.
However, there are some things that we have acquired over the years that have this ‘sentimental’ or emotional value for us- the wrapper of the chocolate your crush gave you or the torn hat which your best friend gave you way back on kindergarten; how are we to let go of them when they mean or meant so much to us?

Given this kind of dilemma, I just simply ask myself one question while holding the object in focus- “Does this thing still give me happiness?” If you answered yes, then it’s good for the parka that your grandmother gave you but if not, then I think that it’s time for you to let go. Someone else might find a better use for it, instead of that object sticking around the corners of your home.
Learn to control the things that you have and not the other way around.
