THE Guide to An Aesthetic Home

A well-organized home can be a sanctuary from the chaos of daily life. But let’s face it—keeping your space neat and tidy can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. Whether you’re dealing with a cluttered closet, a chaotic kitchen, or a living room that has seen better days, organizing your house doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a bit of planning and some strategic effort, you can create a space that is both functional and inviting.

Going home to an organised personal living space helps calm and improve my mood, especially after a long day of hard work. One thing that I am trying to do now is by following the principle of “minimal effort cleaning”. That is if you don’t want to clean your house, then keep it organised and don’t make a mess. Here are the other tips that I found helpful to organise my home.

1. Start with a Plan

Before diving into the piles of clutter, take a moment to envision your ideal living space. Make a list of areas that need attention and prioritize them based on urgency and impact. Creating a clear plan will help you stay focused and motivated. I have a to-do list on my fridge so I can keep up of all my responsibilities at home. This ensures that my routine and my space is organised.

2. Declutter First

The first step in any organization project is decluttering. Go through each room and assess what items you truly need and what can be donated, recycled, or thrown away. Remember the “one-year rule”: If you haven’t used an item in the past year, it’s likely time to let it go. I also try to let go of the things that I haven’t used for a long time or things that doesn’t bring me happiness now.

3. Adopt the ‘One In, One Out’ Rule

To prevent future clutter, adopt the ‘one in, one out’ rule. For every new item you bring into your home, make sure to get rid of an old one. This helps maintain balance and ensures your space doesn’t become overcrowded.

4. Invest in Storage Solutions

Effective storage solutions can make a huge difference. Consider:

  • Shelving Units: Ideal for books, decorative items, and office supplies.
  • Baskets and Bins: Great for keeping small items organized and out of sight.
  • Drawer Organizers: Perfect for keeping utensils, office supplies, or craft materials neatly sorted.
  • Under-Bed Storage: Utilize this often-overlooked space for seasonal items or extra bedding.
  • There are lots of ways to organise small living spaces

5. Create Zones

Divide your home into functional zones. For instance, designate specific areas for reading, working, and relaxing. This will help you keep related items together and streamline your daily routines. For example, my lounge area is my “movie area”, or my bar as my daytime office or my night-time hangouts place. Leave the bedroom for sleep and the fun stuff.

6. Label Everything

Labeling helps everyone in the household know where things belong, making it easier to maintain order. Use clear, legible labels on bins, shelves, and drawers. For a touch of fun, consider using a label maker with customizable designs.

7. Implement Daily Routines

Maintain your newly organized space by incorporating small daily routines. Spend 10-15 minutes each day tidying up and putting things back where they belong. It’s easier to keep a home organized when you tackle clutter regularly rather than letting it build up.

8. Use Vertical Space

Make the most of your vertical space by installing shelves or hanging organizers. This is particularly useful in smaller rooms where floor space is limited. Wall-mounted hooks and racks can also help keep items off surfaces.

9. Make Cleaning Easy

Simplify your cleaning routine by keeping cleaning supplies easily accessible. Store them in a central location, such as a cleaning caddy or closet, and make sure everything is in its place. This makes it easier to do quick touch-ups and maintain a clean home.

10. Personalize Your Space

Finally, make sure your home reflects your personality and style. Personal touches, such as family photos, artwork, or cherished collections, can make your space feel uniquely yours while still being organized and functional.

Actionable Steps

Organizing your house doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With a bit of planning, decluttering, and strategic use of storage solutions, you can transform your living space into a calm and orderly haven. Remember, the key is to make small, manageable changes that fit into your lifestyle. Happy organizing!
